Astronomy Dates, June 2012

4th – Full Moon

4th – Partial Lunar Eclipse. The Moon passes behind the Earth, so that we can see the Earth’s shadow on the Moon’s surface. Only visible in Asia, Australia, Pacific Ocean and Americas

5th, 6th – Transit of Venus across the Sun. A rare event that can be entirely seen in Eastern Asia, Eastern Australia and Alaska. A partial transit can be seen in progress at sunrise throughout Europe, Western Asia, and Eastern Africa. A partial transit can be seen in progress at sunset throughout most of North America, Central America, and Western South America. The next transit will not take place until the year 2117.

19th – New Moon

20th – June Solstice. The first day of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
